Putin's 2024 Kazakhstan Visit to Strengthen Strategic Ties Without Major New Deals

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Kazakhstan in 2024, marking a significant step in the two nations’ relationship. Analysts describe the trip as a sign of deeper cooperation, though no major new agreements are expected. Instead, discussions will focus on strengthening existing ties across key sectors.

The visit follows a 2025 declaration that elevated Kazakhstan-Russia relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Both sides have since emphasised the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration. Preparations for the visit included a video conference between Astana and Moscow, where officials reviewed bilateral cooperation. Topics such as digitalisation, new technologies, and economic integration were highlighted as priorities. Energy, transport, and logistics—alongside environmental concerns—will also feature prominently in the talks.

Trade between the two countries has been growing steadily, nearing $30 billion. The upcoming Supreme Eurasian Economic Council session will further address these economic ties. Alibek Tazhibayev, director of the Eurasian Monitoring Center, noted that the meeting in Ak Orda would be thorough, reflecting broader global shifts.

Akimzhan Arupov, director of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations, stressed the mutual importance of Kazakhstan and Russia. Alexei Mukhin, head of Russia’s Center for Political Information, added that close coordination between the two leaderships creates a strong synergistic effect. Both analysts agreed that the visit would reinforce long-standing cooperation rather than introduce radical changes. Putin’s visit will build on the 2025 strategic partnership declaration, focusing on practical areas of collaboration. Discussions on energy, transport, and digitalisation aim to solidify economic and political ties. The meeting is expected to produce concrete steps forward in existing joint projects.
