Rare footage reveals Far Eastern leopard cubs cautiously exploring their den

A hidden camera in Russia’s Primorye region has captured rare footage of Far Eastern leopard cubs exploring their den. The playful youngsters, still too small to hunt, kept glancing nervously at the outside world. Their mother was nowhere in sight during the recording. The cubs were filmed peering cautiously from their shelter, their curiosity battling with wariness. At just a few months old, they remained too young to leave the den or fend for themselves. Their mother, like all female leopards, would normally stay with them for the first 18 months of their lives—bringing food, teaching survival skills, and guiding them on short walks.

Meanwhile, adult leopards are known for their resilience in all weather. A recent sighting showed one individual hunting undeterred in heavy rain, its expression seemingly unimpressed by the downpour. Such independence is typical of the species, but the cubs still rely entirely on their mother’s care. The footage offers a glimpse into the early lives of these endangered big cats. Far Eastern leopards are among the rarest in the world, with fewer than 100 left in the wild. Their survival depends on the protection of their habitat and the dedicated care of their mothers during their vulnerable first months.
