A rare visitor to the region—the white-winged tit, known colloquially as the knyazek or "prince" tit for its striking plumage—was spotted in late March at Ptichya Gavan' Nature Park, SuperOmsk has learned.

This small tit, distinguished by its vivid blue-and-white coloring and a crisp white "cap" on its head, is seldom seen in urban areas. Unlike the common azure tit, the knyazek boasts richer hues: a bright yellow breast, deep blue wings and tail, and a bold white crown framed by a blue "helmet."

White-winged tits favor deciduous forests with dense undergrowth, typically staying high in the treetops. In Omsk Oblast, they are most often found in the southern districts, making appearances in city parks a rare treat. Their late-March arrival at Ptichya Gavan' may signal the start of spring migrations.

Like other tits, knyazeks feed on insects and spiders but will also eat seeds when available. During courtship, males are known for their elaborate songs—more melodic and intricate than those of the common azure tit.

Ornithologists note that encountering a white-winged tit within Omsk's city limits is a stroke of luck for birdwatchers. The species is cautious and rarely descends from the canopy, making sightings in the nature park a special occasion.
