Rare swan survives starvation and parasites after icy lake rescue
A rare swan in critical condition was rescued after being discovered on a frozen lake near Gelendzhik. The bird arrived at a local veterinary service severely weakened, with signs of starvation and a heavy parasite infestation. Its unusual lack of caution suggested extreme distress.
The swan was found exhausted and barely responsive on the ice. Its pale mucous membranes pointed to anaemia, while an electrolyte imbalance left it dangerously frail. A closer examination revealed a thick infestation of feather mites around its head and neck.
Veterinarians acted quickly, providing antiparasitic treatment to eliminate the mites. They also gave the bird vitamins to boost its immune and digestive systems. Over time, the swan regained strength in a sheltered space, receiving warmth, food, and constant care. Once the snow melted and the swan's health stabilised, it was released back into the wild. The case highlighted the challenges wild birds face in harsh winter conditions, though exact figures on similar rescues in the Krasnodar region remain unavailable.
The swan's recovery took weeks of dedicated treatment and care. After regaining its strength and shedding the parasite burden, it returned to its natural habitat. The rescue serves as a reminder of how vulnerable wildlife can become during extreme weather.
