Renault strengthens 2035 climate pledges with science-backed emissions cuts

Renault Group has renewed its climate commitments with stricter science-based targets for 2035. The company was the first carmaker to adopt such goals back in 2019. Its updated plans now aim to limit global warming to well below 2°C, with efforts to align with a 1.5°C trajectory by 2050. The new targets, approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), set clear benchmarks for emissions reduction. By 2035, Renault will cut 72% of its operational emissions (scopes 1 and 2) compared to 2019 levels. It will also reduce emissions from production and vehicle use (scope 3) by 57% within the same timeframe.

To support these goals, the company plans to launch 16 new electric models by 2030. Energy use per vehicle produced will drop by 25% over the same period. Battery technology will also improve, with a 10% to 40% boost in energy density expected by the end of the decade.

Renault is further committing to sustainability in its supply chain. By 2030, 30% of its materials—including steel, aluminium, and polymers—will come from the circular economy. The updated targets reinforce Renault’s position as a leader in automotive climate action. With approved reductions across all emission scopes, the company is pushing for faster decarbonisation. These measures will shape its production, vehicle lineup, and material sourcing in the coming years.
