Rhea Space's Vanguard Software Could Revolutionize GPS-Free Satellite Navigation

Rhea Space Activity is advancing its autonomous navigation software, Vanguard, under a new Space Force initiative. The company was one of ten firms chosen for the Sustained Space Maneuver Challenge, securing a $1.9 million contract. Their technology aims to enhance satellite operations in Earth orbit without relying on GPS.

The project builds on AutoNav, a system originally developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Rhea Space commercialised it in 2021 and has since expanded its use across military drones, lunar rovers, and even mining operations in Australia.

Vanguard extends AutoNav's capabilities to support autonomous rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) in space. These maneuvers are vital for military and intelligence tasks, particularly when inspecting objects in areas where GPS signals are unavailable. The software, paired with a camera and flight computer, navigates using the Space Force's Unified Data Library.

Rhea Space is currently testing Vanguard in a physics-based simulation. This environment allows for complex scenario evaluations before any real-world deployment. If successful, the system could eventually be installed on Space Force satellites for live on-orbit demonstrations.

AutoNav itself has already seen wide adoption. Since 2023, it has powered US Army drone autonomy projects and will assist SpaceX's Starship missions in 2025. The technology is also being used in NASA's OSIRIS-REx follow-ups, ESA's lunar rover programmes, and military drones operating in Ukraine since 2024.

The Space Force's challenge aims to push autonomous navigation further. Each of the ten selected companies received the same $1.9 million funding to develop solutions for sustained space maneuvering. Rhea Space's focus remains on refining Vanguard for reliable, GPS-free satellite operations.

The project's next phase could see Vanguard integrated into flight cameras aboard Space Force satellites. This would mark a step forward in autonomous space navigation, particularly for missions in GPS-denied zones. The technology's success in simulations may soon translate into real-world applications for defence and exploration.
