Russia confirms first mpox case as officials monitor close contacts

Russian health authorities have confirmed a case of mpox in the country. The infected individual's close contacts are now under observation as officials take steps to prevent further spread. The virus continues to affect thousands globally, with Africa remaining the hardest-hit region.

The case was identified by Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's consumer health watchdog. Officials used domestically developed PCR test kits to detect the virus within hours. These kits were designed specifically for mpox diagnosis.

All individuals who came into constant contact with the patient have been traced. They are now under a 21-day observation period, required to self-isolate and check their temperature daily. If any symptoms appear, medical teams will respond immediately, and the patient's home will be disinfected.

Mpox spreads mainly through close physical contact, including sexual activity, or by touching contaminated objects. The World Health Organization reports that over 50,800 cases have been recorded in Africa in the past year. Outside the continent, nearly all infections—99%—occur in adults over 18, with 97% affecting men.

Russia's response includes strict monitoring of contacts and rapid testing. The country's use of local diagnostic tools aims to contain the virus quickly. Meanwhile, global health data shows mpox remains a significant concern, particularly in African nations.
