Russia Kicks Off Year of National Unity to Celebrate Cultural Diversity

Russia has officially launched its Year of National Unity in Khabarovsk. The campaign aims to strengthen bonds between the country's diverse ethnic groups while preserving their unique traditions. It also seeks to promote a shared sense of civic identity across the nation.

The idea for the initiative came from Vitaly Kuznetsov, Ataman of the All-Russian Cossack Society. He first proposed the concept to President Vladimir Putin during a meeting of the Council for Interethnic Relations. The year-long programme will focus on interethnic harmony, friendship, and deeper mutual understanding.

The launch event in Khabarovsk included a variety of cultural activities. Visitors explored an exhibition of traditional musical instruments and sampled dishes from different regions. Workshops were led by members of the Assembly of the Peoples of Russia and the Movement of the Firsts youth organisation.

Educational talks also formed part of the programme. Speakers from the Znanie Society delivered lectures on themes like The Power of Unity: Russia's Past and Future and Strength in Diversity: Languages and Traditions of Russia's Peoples.

The Year of National Unity will run throughout 2026, though specific projects or local reactions remain unclear. Organisers have emphasised the importance of cultural exchange and civic cohesion. The campaign's success will depend on participation from communities across Russia.
