Russia Launches National Abilympics to Boost Skills and Employment for People with Disabilities

Russia has kicked off the qualifying stage of the Abilympics, a national championship for people with disabilities and health limitations. The event aims to support participants in developing skills and securing employment, with over 93% of past contestants finding jobs after competing. The competition will span all of Russia’s federal districts, involving more than 2,200 participants. A total of 735 experts from 54 regions will assess performances across 47 skill categories. Organisers include regional governments, the Ministry of Education, the National Abilympics Center, and the presidential platform Russia – Land of Opportunity.

St. Petersburg and the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania were the first to host qualifying rounds. New venues this year include the Vologda Region, the Republic of Crimea, and the Chuvash Republic. Winners from each category will advance to the finals, with the list of finalists set to be announced in July. Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister, highlighted the Abilympics as a key initiative for unlocking potential. He noted that the competition aligns with national development goals outlined by President Vladimir Putin. Successful participants will earn a place in the 2026 National Abilympics Finals.

The qualifying stage will determine regional representatives for the upcoming finals. Contestants will compete in a range of professional and creative skills, with expert judges evaluating their abilities. The event continues to expand, offering more opportunities for people with disabilities to showcase their talents.
