Russia Launches 'Reading as a Family' Contest with Putin's Backing
An All-Russian online contest called 'Reading as a Family' has opened for entries. Organised by the Znaniye Society, the competition invites families across the country to share their love of books in creative ways. President Vladimir Putin has publicly supported the initiative, adding weight to its national reach. The contest runs in three stages: the first from March 26 to May 31, the second from June 1 to July 31, and the final phase from August 1 to September 30. Participants can submit video entries featuring dramatic readings, skits, book discussions, or any original format that highlights family reading traditions. Each phase will select 100 finalists and 10 winners, who will receive book collections and other prizes.
Residents of **Sverdlovsk Oblast** are among those encouraged to take part. The contest is backed by the **Russian State Children's Library** and the **Movement of the Firsts**, ensuring broad engagement. A closing ceremony and awards presentation will take place in **late 2024** at the **National Russia Center**, coinciding with the **School Librarians' Forum**. All entries must be submitted by **September 30**. Organisers stress that the contest celebrates not just reading, but the creative ways families bond over literature.
The contest will conclude with a formal event honouring the winners. Finalists will gather at the National Russia Center, where prizes will be awarded during the School Librarians' Forum. The initiative aims to promote reading as a shared family activity while offering tangible rewards for participation.
