Russia overhauls education to fuel its booming bioeconomy sector by 2036

Russia is set to revamp its education system to support the growing bioeconomy sector. President Vladimir Putin has ordered a major update to educational standards, focusing on interdisciplinary training and artificial intelligence. The changes aim to prepare specialists for future challenges in biotechnology and related fields. The government has been given clear deadlines to implement the new strategy. By June 1, 2024, the Cabinet must approve a long-term bioeconomy development plan running until 2036. This will include measures to boost human resources, with an assessment of their effectiveness due by July 1, 2026.

The revised educational standards will blend natural sciences, engineering, and economics. AI technologies will also play a key role in the updated curriculum. The Cabinet must submit proposals for these changes by September 1, 2026.

To further support the sector, the government will create programs promoting biotechnology and bioeconomics. A progress report on these initiatives is expected by August 1, 2026. Additionally, a support system for bioeconomy projects will be introduced, featuring tax and non-tax incentives. The number of state-funded university and college places in relevant fields may also increase. The reforms will reshape Russia’s approach to education in bioeconomy-related disciplines. By integrating AI and interdisciplinary training, the government aims to strengthen the workforce for this expanding sector. The success of these changes will be measured through regular assessments and progress reports in the coming years.
