Russia Pushes BRICS Grain Exchange to Strengthen Food Security and Local Trade
Russia has proposed the creation of a dedicated grain exchange for BRICS nations. The idea was first introduced in early March by Eduard Zernin, chairman of Russia's Union of Grain Exporters. Officials have since described the plan as promising, with President Vladimir Putin expressing support.
The initiative aims to strengthen food security within the bloc and explore trade settlements in national currencies rather than foreign ones. The proposal took centre stage at the 14th meeting of BRICS agriculture ministers. There, Russia's Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut announced that her ministry was drafting plans for the exchange. The gathering focused on food security challenges facing both the BRICS bloc and the wider world.
BRICS nations already hold significant influence in global grain markets. Together, they control around 30% of the world's arable land and produce roughly 40% of its grain. Many member states, whether as producers or buyers, could benefit from a shared trading platform.
In late May, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev called the grain exchange a promising step. He highlighted its potential to reduce reliance on foreign currencies in trade. So far, however, no public statements or concrete actions from other BRICS members—Brazil, India, China, South Africa, or newer entrants—have emerged in support of the plan. The proposed BRICS grain exchange remains in its early stages, with Russia leading the development. If implemented, it could reshape trade flows among some of the world's largest agricultural players. For now, the bloc's other members have yet to respond publicly to the initiative.
