Russian man fined and sentenced for smuggling 77 litres of black caviar

A court in Khabarovsk has convicted a man from Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug for illegally trafficking black caviar. The Krasnoflotsky District Court ruled that the defendant had transported a large quantity of the protected resource without authorisation. He now faces both a fine and compulsory labour as punishment. The case began when police intercepted the suspect in Khabarovsk. Officers seized a semi-trailer truck carrying 77 litres of black caviar, packed into 154 plastic containers. The man had purchased the caviar in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and was transporting it towards Moscow.

During the trial, the defendant admitted his guilt in trafficking the protected species. The court found him guilty of illegally dealing in highly valuable aquatic biological resources listed in Russia’s Red Data Book.

The judge sentenced him to eight months of compulsory labour, with 10% of his wages to be deducted for the state. In addition, he was ordered to pay a fine of 200,000 rubles. The ruling confirms the illegal nature of the caviar shipment and enforces penalties under Russian law. The defendant must now complete his labour sentence while forfeiting part of his earnings. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat the black-market trade in endangered aquatic species.
