Petersdotter: Climate Protection Despite Changed Priorities - Schleswig-Holstein's Greens pivot to digital reforms ahead of 2027 election

Schleswig-Holstein has made strides in digital infrastructure, with every school now linked to the fibre-optic network. Meanwhile, the Green Party in the state is pushing new policies to regain public backing for climate action. Their plans include laws to speed up digitalisation and major projects before the 2027 election.

The Green Party's focus has shifted in response to changing public attitudes. Lasse Petersdotter, leader of the party's parliamentary group, admits that Russia's war in Ukraine has overshadowed climate concerns for many. Now, only 20% of the party's work targets long-term issues like climate change, while 80% addresses immediate problems.

Before the 2027 state election, the Greens aim to finalise key initiatives. These include amending the state constitution and completing a regional public transport plan. They also plan to introduce a law accelerating digitalisation, building on recent progress—such as full fibre-optic coverage in all schools.

Despite the shift in priorities, climate protection remains central to their agenda. However, there is no evidence that their policies in Schleswig-Holstein have directly shaped climate measures in other German states over the past five years. Instead, the party now emphasises how its work improves daily life, hoping to rebuild support for environmental action.

The Green Party's strategy combines short-term fixes with long-term goals. Their push for digital and transport reforms aims to demonstrate tangible benefits for residents. Success in these areas could determine whether climate action regains prominence in the state's political debate.
