Simulated Forest Fire: Disaster Protection Teams Practice Real-Life Scenario - Schwerin stages massive wildfire drill in munition-contaminated woodland

A major emergency drill is taking place in Schwerin today. The exercise simulates a wildfire spreading through a munition-contaminated woodland in the Schelfwerder district. Authorities have warned residents, allotment gardeners and boathouse owners to adjust their weekend plans accordingly.

The scenario begins with a fire breaking out south of Paulsdamm, driven by strong winds toward Drosselweg and nearby allotment gardens. Due to unexploded ordnance in the area, direct firefighting is considered impossible. Instead, the operation focuses on containment and support measures.

Over 120 emergency personnel are involved, deploying fire engines and a police water cannon. Key tasks include aerial surveillance via drones, water extraction from Schwerin Lake, and long-distance water transport. Official records show around 1,200 tonnes of old munitions documented in the woodland, with estimates suggesting an additional 500–800 tonnes may remain undetected. Temporary road closures and no-parking restrictions will be enforced between 7:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The drill aims to test coordination between services while accounting for the unique hazards of the contaminated site.

The exercise will conclude by the afternoon, with all restrictions lifted once operations finish. Emergency services will review response tactics, particularly for high-risk areas with unexploded ordnance. Residents are advised to follow updates from local authorities as the drill progresses.
