Siegen-Wittgenstein faces financial crisis after budget vote collapses

Siegen-Wittgenstein's county council failed to pass a budget for 2026 during a lengthy meeting on Friday. The deadlock now risks leaving the district with nearly exhausted funds before the next council session in June. Officials warn that urgent financial measures will be needed to avoid disruption. The six-hour debate centred on a CDU proposal to freeze hiring for vacant positions, except in emergency services. District Administrator Andreas Müller (SPD) cautioned that such a move would impact 108 roles. After legal concerns arose over the council's authority to enforce the freeze, the CDU withdrew the proposal, leading to its rejection.

Without an approved staffing plan, the council could not finalise the budget. As a result, the district will now operate under 'provisional budget management' until a new agreement is reached. If no budget is passed at the next meeting, the Arnsberg regional government holds the power to impose one. The treasurer is now tasked with negotiating short-term solutions. Plans include discussions with banks and requests for support from the regional government to cover immediate costs.

The failed vote leaves Siegen-Wittgenstein in financial uncertainty. Provisional measures will keep services running, but a permanent budget must be approved by June to avoid intervention. The council's next meeting will determine whether a compromise can be reached or if external controls take effect.
