Suzuki Fronx returns to market after critical seatbelt recall fixes
The Suzuki Fronx small SUV has returned to the market after a temporary withdrawal due to a safety concern. Over 100 units were delivered within its first week back on sale. The model had previously faced a recall linked to a faulty rear seatbelt system. The Fronx was pulled from sale earlier this year after failing a crash test. The issue stemmed from a malfunction in the rear seatbelt retractor, leading to a one-star safety rating from ANCAP. New Zealand's transport agency, NZTA Waka Kotahi, advised Suzuki to halt sales and warned owners against carrying rear passengers until repairs were made.
Suzuki New Zealand has since recalled all affected Fronx models to replace both rear seatbelt retractors. The company is focusing on private owners first, with plans to complete the recall by late April. Despite the setback, the Fronx remains a key model for Suzuki, which already has a strong foothold in the compact SUV market with vehicles like the Jimny. Before the recall, the Fronx had proven popular, ranking as Suzuki's second-best-selling model by the end of last year. It also topped sales charts in India in February 2025 and continues to perform well there as part of Maruti Suzuki's expanding utility vehicle lineup.
The Fronx is now back in showrooms, with Suzuki working to resolve the seatbelt issue for all owners. The recall process is underway, with private customers being prioritised. Once completed, the model is expected to regain its position as a strong contender in the small SUV segment.
