Sverdlovsk Region Celebrates Pavel Bazhov's Legacy 75 Years On

The Sverdlovsk Region is honouring writer Pavel Petrovich Bazhov, 75 years after his death. A new exhibit at the Regional Museum of Local History recreates his study, complete with a detailed 1:12 scale model. Meanwhile, an animated short inspired by his famous felt boots has premiered, bringing a true story from his life to the screen. The Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local History has unveiled a special exhibit dedicated to Bazhov. Visitors can explore a life-sized recreation of his study, alongside a meticulously crafted 1:12 scale model known as a rumbox. Among the displayed items are his iconic felt boots, which have long been a symbol of his literary legacy.

An animated short, *Bazhov’s Felt Boots*, draws inspiration from these boots and a real-life event involving the writer and his editor, Valentina Artyushina. The film was directed by Sergei Aynutdinov, a Merited Artist of the Russian Federation, with a screenplay by Nadezhda Koltycheva. Its release coincides with the anniversary of Bazhov’s passing. Beyond the museum, the Sverdlovsk Regional Interethnic Library hosted *The Casket of Ural Tales*, a literary and musical programme celebrating his work. Roman Dorokhin, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Sverdlovsk Region, remarked that Bazhov’s influence extends well beyond the Urals. Additionally, the Sverdlovsk Musical Comedy Theater is staging a production featuring songs by the rock band Chayf, further highlighting the region’s cultural ties to Bazhov’s legacy.

The new exhibit and animated film ensure Bazhov’s stories and personal history remain accessible to modern audiences. His felt boots, now central to both the museum display and the short film, continue to symbolise his enduring connection to Ural folklore. The events mark a year of renewed interest in his contributions to Russian literature.
