Switzerland pushes for clearer tap water quality and origin details

Switzerland has taken a step towards making tap water information more transparent. The National Council voted 122 to 56 in favour of a motion requiring clearer details on water quality and origin. Supporters argue this will build public trust and reduce reliance on bottled water.

The push for better transparency began after a 2024 study revealed that only 10 percent of water suppliers fully met disclosure requirements. Interior Minister Élisabeth Baume-Schneider confirmed that many were failing their legal duties to share key details.

Sophie Michaud Gigon of the Greens argued that clearer information—such as treatment methods, water hardness, and quality—would encourage more people to drink tap water instead of buying bottled alternatives. The Federal Council backed the proposal, stating it would benefit consumers.

Opposition came from Katja Riem of the SVP, who claimed many suppliers already provided sufficient transparency. Despite this, the motion passed, though it still needs approval from the Council of States. Currently, no cantons have introduced specific measures to enforce the new requirements.

If approved by the Council of States, the motion will require suppliers to share more detailed water data. This could lead to greater public confidence in tap water. For now, the proposal awaits further legislative review.
