Sword Health's $4B app redesign merges AI with human therapists
Sword Health, the Portuguese health tech company now valued at $4 billion, is rolling out a major update to its app. Known internally as Chapter 2, the redesign introduces a three-way chat involving users, an AI assistant named Phoenix, and a human physical therapist. The changes aim to create a more personal and responsive experience for patients.
Product Manager Catarina Farinha recently discussed the update on *The Future of the Future*, a podcast by Expresso. The episode is now available on Expresso's platforms, SIC, SIC Notícias, and other major podcast services.
The updated app centres on a new interaction model. Phoenix, the AI chatbot, engages directly with users but is programmed to recognise its own limits. When faced with uncertainty or clinical questions, it immediately loops in the assigned physical therapist. This ensures decisions about treatment remain in human hands.
Sword Health stresses that the redesign keeps a clinician involved at every critical step. While AI helps scale care, the company insists human expertise remains essential. Phoenix is trained to be transparent about what it can and cannot handle, reinforcing trust between the user and the system. Farinha explained that the goal is to make users feel *deeply heard and human*. The three-way chat structure allows for smoother communication, blending AI efficiency with the empathy of a real therapist. The company has not released details on how widely the app is used in Portugal or which health areas it covers most frequently.
The app's redesign marks a shift in how Sword Health delivers care. By combining AI support with constant clinician oversight, the company aims to improve accessibility without sacrificing quality. The updated version is expected to roll out as part of Sword Health's continued expansion in digital physical therapy.
