Thane Offers Free Oxygen Concentrators to Chronic Lung Patients in Need

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has launched a new scheme to provide free oxygen concentrators for residents with chronic lung diseases. The initiative targets those from economically weaker backgrounds who require long-term oxygen therapy at home. Officials say the move will ease pressure on local hospitals while offering financial relief to struggling families. The decision comes as Thane faces a growing number of respiratory illnesses, driven by rising pollution, lifestyle changes, and lingering post-COVID-19 complications. Patients suffering from asthma, pneumonia, and other chronic lung disorders will now have access to oxygen support without cost.

TMC will repurpose concentrators originally donated during the peak of the pandemic. All machines have been serviced and are ready for immediate distribution. The scheme is led by Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Prasad Patil, with backing from former Corporator Rajesh More and Mayor Sharmila Pipolkar. By enabling home-based treatment, the initiative aims to reduce hospital visits for stable patients. It also addresses the rising expenses of long-term oxygen therapy, which many low-income families struggle to afford.

The free oxygen concentrators will be allocated based on medical need and financial eligibility. Authorities expect the programme to improve treatment access for vulnerable patients while cutting healthcare costs. Distribution has begun, with TMC urging eligible residents to apply through local health centres.
