Toddler dies after being left in locked car during Mexicali heatwave

A toddler in Mexicali has died after being left overnight in a locked car during extreme summer heat. Authorities have now charged the boy’s mother with improper omission homicide, with prosecutors seeking a prison sentence of up to 15 years. The incident occurred after the mother, identified as Roxana N., attended a party and returned home without realising her son remained in the vehicle. Temperatures that night in Mexicali ranged from 30°C to 34°C, conditions known to cause rapid overheating inside cars. The child’s body later showed first-degree burns on his arms and thighs.

Mexicali is one of Mexico’s most affected regions for heatstroke deaths, with extreme summer temperatures posing severe risks. Baja California Attorney General María Elena Andrade Ramírez confirmed that prosecutors will pursue charges of homicide with eventual intent. The case now moves forward in the legal system.

The mother faces an eight- to 15-year prison term if convicted. The tragedy highlights the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles during high heat. Authorities continue to warn residents about the risks of heatstroke in the region.
