BCG, Bain and Alvarez to ramp up entry level hiring despite AI fears

Top consulting firms defy AI fears with record graduate hiring spree

Top consulting firms are expanding their graduate recruitment despite concerns about AI reshaping the industry. Bain & Co, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Alvarez & Marsal are all increasing hiring targets for juniors and fresh graduates this year.

The move comes as AI tools alter how consultants work, particularly for entry-level roles. Bain & Co is leading the push with plans to hire 'triple-digit numbers' of graduates and junior consultants. Their recruitment target has already been raised twice in 2024, with graduate hiring set to rise by 25% compared to last year. Clare Gordon, the firm’s managing partner, has stated that AI will not reduce demand for junior consultants.

BCG is also maintaining steady hiring levels, with numbers either matching or slightly exceeding those of previous years. Meanwhile, Alvarez & Marsal is preparing for long-term growth by establishing graduate schemes in partnership with universities across the US and Europe. Antonio Alvarez III, the firm’s European practice lead, confirmed plans to significantly increase graduate recruitment in the coming years.

The surge in hiring reflects a broader shift in client expectations. As AI becomes more embedded in consulting, firms are adjusting how they charge for services and deliver value. Junior consultants, in particular, are seeing changes in their day-to-day tasks as automation tools take on routine analysis and data processing. The consultancy sector is adapting to AI-driven changes by investing in junior talent. Bain & Co, BCG, and Alvarez & Marsal are all expanding their graduate programmes, signalling confidence in the continued need for human expertise. Clients, too, are redefining their demands as technology reshapes the industry’s traditional workflows.
