TU Berlin is set to build a new research facility dedicated to photonics and quantum science. Named CIPHOR, the centre will replace an outdated building and expand the university’s scientific capabilities. Construction is planned to start in 2028, with a budget of around €93.75 million. The new CIPHOR building will stand on the east campus, positioned between the IMoS facility and the Berlin Zoo’s administrative offices. Designed as a five-storey structure, it will cover 4,496 square meters. Funding will come from €31.325 million in federal support, with the rest provided by TU Berlin itself.
The building’s design includes green terraces on the façade and a roof fitted with photovoltaic panels. Heat-recovery systems will also be installed to improve energy efficiency. Inside, a key feature will be a large cleanroom on the second floor, measuring 14 metres across and free of support columns. Before CIPHOR is completed, TU Berlin plans to launch another major project: the Chemical Invention Factory. This European centre for green chemistry will focus on sustainable research methods. Both initiatives reflect the university’s push to update its infrastructure for modern scientific work.
CIPHOR will replace the Eugene-Wigner Building, which no longer meets current research standards. The project marks a significant step in TU Berlin’s efforts to strengthen its facilities. Once finished, the new centre will provide advanced spaces for photonics and quantum science studies.
