Turkestan launches massive locust control operation ahead of April swarms

The Turkestan Region is gearing up for a major locust control operation as early as April. Authorities have divided the area into 65 sectors, each with its own team to monitor and respond to pest threats. Preparations include updated chemical treatments and stricter safety rules for the campaign ahead. Last year, over 150,000 hectares of farmland were treated at a cost of more than half a billion tenge. This season, tens of thousands of hectares in high-risk districts will again undergo preventive measures. Over 2,000 hectares have already been plowed to disrupt locust breeding grounds.

More than 2,000 specialists and workers will take part in the operation. They will use over 400 sprayers, aircraft, and drones to tackle the infestation. Weekly meetings are now being held to coordinate efforts and review phytosanitary security. Locust larvae are expected to appear as early as the first half of April. The region has updated its list of approved chemicals and reinforced safety protocols to ensure effective and secure pest control.

The campaign will cover vulnerable areas with a mix of ground and aerial treatments. Teams will focus on early detection and rapid response to limit crop damage. The operation aims to protect farmland across Turkestan before the locusts fully emerge.
