The U.S. Space Force has secured a major funding boost under the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. A total of $16.6 billion will support research and development, with key investments targeting missile defence and data relay systems. The move aims to strengthen the nation’s ability to detect and counter potential threats. A significant portion of the funding—$1.2 billion—will upgrade the Space Force’s data relay and missile warning systems. Of this, $474 million is earmarked for the polar segment of the Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) system. This upgrade will enhance the military’s ability to track and respond to missile threats.

Another $500 million is allocated to Tranche 3 of the Space Development Agency’s Transport Layer. This project could redefine how the Space Force handles data transmission in the future. Officials are considering multiple suppliers for the spacecraft and ground terminals needed for the system.

The design of the data relay satellites remains under review. Two options are on the table: the Space Development Agency’s existing framework and a lesser-known constellation called MILNET. The total budget for these efforts now nears $1.2 billion. The funding will directly improve missile warning and tracking capabilities. It also sets the stage for a more advanced data transmission network within the Space Force. These upgrades are expected to play a critical role in the nation’s defence strategy moving forward.
