UK launches bold space projects to revolutionize satellite tech and sustainability
The UK has unveiled a series of cutting-edge space projects aimed at boosting satellite technology and sustainability. These innovations will cover everything from AI-powered radar analysis to greener propulsion systems and advanced robotic servicing tools. The government has highlighted their potential to improve climate monitoring, national security, and global connectivity. Five key areas form the backbone of the new initiatives: space domain awareness, in-orbit servicing, Earth observation, satellite communications, and navigation systems. The University of Birmingham is leading one project with an AI-driven radar system designed to enhance space awareness and enable autonomous satellite operations.
Lodestar Space will build modular robotic tools for servicing spacecraft in orbit. These systems aim to cut down on space debris while extending the working life of satellites. Meanwhile, Protolaunch and Orbit Fab are developing eco-friendly propulsion—one using water-based technology, the other a refuellable electric system—to make satellite operations more sustainable.
BAE Systems Digital Intelligence is also contributing with a new satellite service for detecting and tracking radio signals from Earth. This capability could support everything from disaster response to agricultural monitoring. Space Minister Liz Lloyd emphasised that the funding will help UK innovators push forward next-generation technology.
The projects are expected to create around 140 skilled jobs in fields like engineering, data science, and advanced manufacturing. These advancements will strengthen the UK’s position in space technology while addressing critical challenges. Enhanced Earth observation, greener propulsion, and improved satellite servicing could transform industries from farming to security. The initiatives also aim to reduce space debris and support long-term sustainability in orbit.
