UK pilot scheme launches six spin-outs by sharing university tech offices

A six-month pilot scheme led by Research England has helped launch six new spin-out companies while supporting over 80 organisations. The programme tested a fresh approach by encouraging universities to share Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs). Inspired by businessman Tony Hickson’s review, the initiative aimed to strengthen investment links between academia and industry. The pilot focused on accelerating innovation by bringing together researchers, students, and businesses. Over 323 commercial opportunities emerged from the collaboration, with hundreds of participants receiving specialist training. Among the standout projects was Frontier Space, a Cranfield University spin-out developing orbital laboratories and pharmaceutical manufacturing for the commercial space sector.

Another key venture, Giving Hope, linked to Lancaster University, is improving support for vulnerable mothers and babies affected by safeguarding measures. Meanwhile, Blast EcoShield Ltd is creating eco-friendly blast protection systems using engineered living walls. At the University of the Arts London, two projects—Circular Capital and Reskinning Reality—are using AI and digital technology to cut waste and modernise fashion production. In total, the pilot backed 13 projects across England, involving more than 80 organisations.

The scheme’s results highlight its success in fostering partnerships between universities and businesses. Six new companies have now launched, while training and commercial opportunities have expanded. The shared TTO model could shape future university-industry collaborations in the UK.
