UK retailers race to meet soaring demands for faster, flexible payments
UK retailers now face far higher demands from customers when it comes to payments. A new report shows that business owners and decision-makers have raised their expectations of payment providers over the past two years. Shoppers increasingly want smooth, flexible, and fast checkout experiences across all stages of their journey. The shift in customer behaviour has pushed retailers to rethink how they handle transactions. Nearly half (46%) of UK retail leaders believe shoppers now expect mobile or flexible checkout options rather than just traditional tills. Many stores are responding by mixing fixed, mobile, and in-aisle payment methods to keep up with demand.
Speed at checkout remains a critical focus, with 77% of retailers prioritising quick transactions for daily trading. At the same time, 80% say accepting all major cards and digital wallets is essential to their operations. Integrated reporting and reconciliation also matter, with 77% viewing them as key to running their businesses efficiently.
Looking ahead, 44% of retail decision-makers think faster access to funds will soon become a competitive necessity. The report highlights that every second counts—whether in service, fulfilment, or resolving issues—with 91% of retailers ranking adaptation to customer behaviour as a top priority. The findings reveal a clear trend: UK retailers must offer faster, more flexible payment options to stay competitive. As customer expectations rise, businesses are investing in technology and processes to meet demands for convenience, speed, and seamless transactions. The ability to adapt quickly will likely shape the future of retail payments.
