UK Startup Odin Space Secures $3M to Track Tiny but Deadly Space Debris

British startup Odin Space has raised $3 million to develop tiny sensors for tracking space debris. The company plans to launch its first commercial product, Nano Sensors, in 2026. These sensors will help satellites detect and assess damage from even the smallest pieces of orbital junk. Founded in 2020 by James New and Dan Terrett, Odin Space focuses on mapping debris smaller than a centimetre. Such fragments are difficult to track but can still cause serious harm to satellites. The company’s technology aims to give operators better data for choosing safer orbits.

In 2023, Odin Space tested its first sensor aboard D-Orbit’s ION orbital transfer vehicle. The demonstration proved the system could detect debris impacts and measure their effects. Now, the startup is preparing Nano Sensors for commercial use, initially targeting satellites in low-Earth orbit. Beyond damage detection, the sensors will record the time, location, and severity of each collision. This data could also support new insurance products for satellite operators. Odin Space is already working with Lloyds of London and other firms to develop policies covering debris-related risks. The company sees further potential in military applications. Meanwhile, it is expanding its team by hiring sales and marketing staff to promote the technology.

Odin Space’s Nano Sensors will launch commercially in 2026, offering real-time debris monitoring for satellites. The $3 million funding will help scale production and refine the system’s capabilities. With growing concerns over space junk, the technology could play a key role in protecting orbital assets.
