The University of North Dakota (UND) will launch a groundbreaking laser system in 2023 to communicate with satellites. This £5 million setup marks the first civilian ground station using the Space Development Agency’s standard. The technology promises faster, more efficient data transfers than traditional radio signals. The new system relies on lasers instead of radio waves, offering a major upgrade in speed and precision. UND’s equipment can measure light pulses down to 100 picoseconds, enabling real-time video feeds from space missions. Despite its power, the laser wavelengths remain invisible, so no light shows will be seen on campus.

The technology will not interfere with nearby air traffic, including flights at Grand Forks Airport or the local air base. Beyond communication, the lasers could assist satellites in relaying critical data for agriculture, weather forecasting, and other fields. Students at UND may also gain an advantage in the job market by working with this advanced system.

Funding for the £5 million project came from both state and federal sources. The setup aligns with the Space Development Agency’s standards, positioning UND as a leader in space-based laser communication.
