Unprecedented Prison Riot Erupts at Bellechasse Over Harsh Conditions

A violent uprising broke out at Bellechasse Prison in Fribourg on Monday evening. Dozens of inmates clashed with guards, damaged property, and refused orders to return to their cells. Authorities later described the incident as unprecedented in the facility's history.

The unrest began when prisoners protested against conditions inside the jail. Complaints included the high cost of phone calls, overpriced canteen food, and strict visiting rules. Inmates became increasingly aggressive, threatening staff and vandalising parts of the prison.

By early evening, the situation escalated as prisoners barricaded themselves in a section of the high-security wing. They ignored repeated demands to stand down, forcing staff to call for police backup. The standoff lasted three hours before reinforcements arrived.

Order was finally restored at 10:00 PM, when inmates returned to their cells. No previous records exist of similar riots at Bellechasse or of preventive measures taken by Swiss prison authorities in response to such events.

Didier Page, deputy secretary-general of the Directorate of Justice, Security, and Sport, later called the incident extraordinary. His statement highlighted the severity of the unrest and the lack of prior warnings.

The protest ended after police intervention, with all prisoners back in their cells by late evening. The incident has raised questions about conditions at the facility, given the inmates' specific grievances. Authorities have not yet announced any follow-up actions or investigations.
