The US Air Force has taken delivery of its first T-7 Red Hawk trainer jet, marking a major step in modernising pilot training. The aircraft landed at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph on 5 December 2023 after a short journey from Sheppard Air Force Base. This arrival follows years of preparation and delays due to poor weather conditions. The T-7’s journey began on 3 December when Lt. Col. Michael 'Hyde' Trott piloted the jet from Boeing’s St. Louis factory to Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. Two days later, Lt. Col. Phillip 'Clean' Bourquin flew it the final leg to Randolph. The transfer had been delayed by bad weather, forcing the Air Force to postpone both the flight and a planned welcome ceremony.
Instructors from the 99th Flying Training Squadron had spent months preparing for the jet’s arrival. They logged tens, if not hundreds, of hours in simulators to familiarise themselves with the new aircraft. The squadron also worked closely with Boeing and the Air Force’s T-7 program office to develop the jet’s manuals and training materials.
The T-7 is the Air Force’s first new jet trainer in decades, designed specifically to train pilots for fifth-generation fighters and the B-21 Raider stealth bomber. Before students begin flying in fall 2027, the 99th’s instructors will train in the aircraft themselves, practising basic fighter manoeuvres. The jet’s initial operational testing is scheduled to start in summer 2027. The T-7’s arrival at Randolph marks the beginning of a new phase in Air Force pilot training. Instructors will now undergo hands-on training before the first students take to the skies in late 2027. The jet is set to become the backbone of advanced flight instruction for years to come.
