Uttar Pradesh battles record power demand as heatwave grips the state
Uttar Pradesh is facing record electricity demand as summer temperatures soar. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered urgent measures to ensure reliable power supply across the state. The government is also focusing on faster complaint resolution and stronger infrastructure to handle the rising consumption. The state’s peak power demand recently hit 30,339 megawatts, one of the highest in the country. To meet this surge, Adityanath instructed officials to maximise efficiency at all generation units and reinforce the transmission network. Uttar Pradesh now operates over 60,858 circuit kilometres of lines through 715 substations, with transmission availability at 99.30 percent.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for uninterrupted supply in both rural and urban areas during the extreme heat. He also called for feeder-wise accountability, faster complaint resolution, and clear public communication. Smart meter consumers must receive timely and accurate bills, he added. Adityanath further ordered physical inspections of helpline call centres to improve grievance handling. Rapid response teams must stay active during storms and strong winds to quickly restore power in affected zones. The state’s total generation capacity has now reached 13,388 megawatts, with nearly 10,000 megawatts coming from non-conventional sources.
The government’s directives aim to prevent outages and maintain stable electricity supply during peak demand. Officials have been tasked with strengthening infrastructure, improving response times, and ensuring transparency in billing. These steps follow Uttar Pradesh’s growing reliance on both conventional and renewable energy sources.
