Vatican's AI Encyclical Sparks Global Debate on Ethics and Human Dignity
The Vatican’s upcoming encyclical on artificial intelligence has drawn attention from faith leaders and ethicists worldwide. Among them is Brian J.A. Boyd, the U.S. faith liaison for the Future of Life Institute, who is working to ensure religious communities have a voice in shaping AI’s future. His efforts come as debates grow over the technology’s risks and its impact on human dignity.
The encyclical, titled Magnifica Humanitas, will explore AI’s threats and opportunities, particularly in relation to self-governance and ethical concerns. Boyd sees the document as a potential guide for action where human values clash with rapid technological change. Boyd’s role at the Future of Life Institute involves engaging with religious groups across the U.S. to gather their concerns and hopes about AI. The organisation, which focuses on steering transformative technologies toward human benefit, recently secured funding for projects helping faith communities articulate their needs in an AI-driven society.
Before joining the Institute, Boyd taught business ethics and Catholic social teaching at Loyola University New Orleans. His background informs his current work, which emphasises AI ethics and the common good. In a personal capacity, he also helped coordinate an amicus brief filed by Catholic ethicists in Anthropic vs. the Department of War, a case highlighting tensions between AI development and moral responsibility.
The debate intensifies as companies like Anthropic push to replace human workers with AI, admitting to ethical compromises under competitive pressure. Boyd’s efforts align with the Institute’s mission: reducing extreme risks while ensuring technology serves humanity rather than undermines it.
Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical is expected to address these tensions directly. Boyd hopes it will provide clear guidance, defending human dignity where AI’s current use falls short. The encyclical’s release will coincide with growing calls for ethical oversight in AI development. Boyd’s work bridges faith-based perspectives with policy discussions, ensuring diverse voices shape the technology’s trajectory. How religious communities respond—and whether policymakers act on their concerns—will influence AI’s role in society for years to come.
