Two Venezuelan men have been arrested in Tapachula, Chiapas, on charges of aggravated extortion. The suspects allegedly threatened local business owners with violence if they failed to pay protection money. Authorities also seized drugs, cash, and criminal paraphernalia during a separate raid in the area.
Ronald N. and Luis Enrique N. were detained after victims reported receiving extortion threats via phone. The callers demanded payment for so-called protection, warning that refusal would result in harm to the victims' families.
In a different operation, three more individuals were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and gang involvement. Officers confiscated 50 bags of crack cocaine, 24 small bags of powder cocaine, and 47 bags of marijuana, along with cash and drug sales business cards.
These arrests follow years of joint efforts between the Chiapas prosecutor's office and security forces. Operations like Huacalli have involved multiple agencies, including Pakal forces, the state guard, army, municipal police, and navy. A March 2026 raid, for example, led to the arrest of two Cubans and a Mexican for drug-related crimes. Despite such successes, cartel extortion networks—particularly those targeting migrants—remain a persistent issue.
Both Venezuelan suspects have now been placed before a judge to determine their legal status.
The arrests highlight ongoing efforts to combat extortion and drug trafficking in Tapachula. Authorities continue to face challenges from organised crime groups exploiting vulnerable populations. The seized evidence and detained suspects will now proceed through the legal system.
