Viasat's HaloNet Aims to Revolutionize Secure Satellite Communications

Viasat has unveiled HaloNet, a new space relay network designed to meet growing demand for secure and continuous satellite communications. The system arrives as NASA phases out its ageing Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), leaving a gap for commercial alternatives to fill. HaloNet promises reliable connectivity for spacecraft throughout their entire mission lifecycle. HaloNet combines multiple communication technologies into a single service. It integrates L-band and Ka-band relay systems, direct-to-Earth links, and plans to include free-space optical connections in the future. This multi-path approach ensures spacecraft operators can maintain command, control, and bandwidth when critical moments arise.

The network targets government, defence, and commercial missions first. Viasat aims to prove HaloNet’s value in these established sectors before expanding into emerging markets like commercial space stations and large low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellations. With tens of thousands of new LEO satellites expected, reliable connectivity has become a pressing challenge for operators.

HaloNet positions Viasat as a commercial successor to TDRSS, but with a broader scope. While TDRSS primarily served NASA, HaloNet will support a wider range of customers, including defence agencies, scientific missions, and private satellite operators. The system’s ability to provide persistent connectivity—from launch telemetry to routine monitoring—sets it apart from existing alternatives.

This announcement marks the first in a series exploring HaloNet’s capabilities. Future reports will cover launch telemetry support, hybrid terminal solutions, and space-based cryptographic security. HaloNet’s launch comes at a time when the satellite industry faces increasing connectivity demands. By offering a unified, multi-band solution, Viasat aims to address gaps left by retiring infrastructure like TDRSS. The network’s success will depend on its adoption by government, defence, and commercial operators in the coming years.
