Who—or what—is the Council of Nine, and why do they still fascinate us?

The Council of Nine is a mysterious concept found in spiritual channeling, UFO research, and esoteric traditions. Often described as a group of nine advanced intelligences, it is said to guide humanity's spiritual growth, planetary evolution, or cosmic order. The idea gained modern prominence in the mid-20th century, during a surge of interest in parapsychology and extraterrestrial phenomena.

The earliest documented references to the Council of Nine date back to the early 1950s. Andrija Puharich, a U.S. Army physician and parapsychologist, conducted séances and psi experiments through his Round Table Foundation in Maine. His work laid the groundwork for what would later become the modern interpretation of the Nine.

By the 1970s, Puharich had established Lab Nine in Ossining, New York. There, psychic Phyllis V. Schlemmer became the primary channeler, relaying messages from the Nine through an entity called Tom. These communications often emphasized expanding human consciousness, ethical technology, and humanity's place in a larger cosmic framework.

The Council is typically portrayed as benevolent teachers or intermediaries between higher realms and human awareness. In UFO research, some describe them as a governing intelligence overseeing Earth. Yet the concept remains controversial. Critics highlight links between Puharich's work and intelligence-funded psi research, while others question inconsistencies in the channeled messages.

The idea of a higher collective authority is not new. Similar themes appear across human history whenever societies seek to explain unseen forces shaping the world.

The Council of Nine continues to spark debate among researchers and spiritual seekers. Its messages—focusing on consciousness, technology, and cosmic order—persist in esoteric and UFO literature. Yet questions about its origins and credibility ensure the topic remains divisive.
