Yakutia's resource boom fuels $27B in local development over five years

Yakutia's mining and oil and gas industries have played a major role in funding regional development over the past five years. Between 2021 and 2025, resource companies contributed nearly 27 billion rubles to support local institutions, businesses, and municipalities. A recent discussion at the State Assembly (Il Tumen) examined how these industries are fulfilling their social responsibilities.

The largest single contribution came from ALROSA, the diamond mining giant, which provided over 17.6 billion rubles. Other key players included Polus Aldan JSC, which signed a cooperation agreement with Yakutia to boost socioeconomic growth in the Aldan District. As part of this deal, the company launched a housing programme to build 750 new residential units.

Infrastructure projects also received significant backing. Sakhaneftegaz LLC funded the construction of a fiber-optic communication line linking Lensk and Olekminsk. Meanwhile, Prognoz-Serebro LLC agreed to finance a new bridge over the Tompo River in the Tomponsky District. Road maintenance was another priority, with YVGK JSC and Polymetal JSC teaming up to uphold a 577-kilometre section of the Kolyma–Nedzhadinskoye road in the same area.

Education and community facilities saw investment as well. Nordgold Management LLC secured funds for a 2,909-square-metre building in the village of Tyanya, which will house a school, kindergarten, and shooting range. According to Mikhail Kirillin, First Deputy Minister of Industry and Geology of Yakutia, mining and oil and gas sectors now generate around 60% of the region's gross product and a large portion of its tax income.

The combined efforts of these companies have directed billions into Yakutia's economy, targeting housing, transport, and public services. While most funding has gone to specific infrastructure and social projects, the long-term impact on local development will depend on how these investments are managed in the coming years.
