First Responders in Fire Incident: "One Just Functions Then" - Young First Aiders Save Lives in Chemnitz Nursing Home Fire
Six young first aiders sprang into action during a fire at a Chemnitz nursing home. The group, trained by the German Red Cross in Saxony, helped evacuate residents and contain the blaze. Their quick response came after hearing alarms while passing by the scene.
The incident began when the group, including Maja Feil, noticed smoke and fire alarms near Schlossteich pond. They had just visited Chemnitz's emergency dispatch centre earlier that day. Without hesitation, they identified themselves as first responders to the nursing home staff and began assisting.
The team, which included Clemens Michael—a volunteer firefighter—extinguished flames on the second floor. Meanwhile, others like Feil guided residents to safety. Their training from the German Red Cross's voluntary social year proved crucial in managing the emergency.
Despite their efforts, an 84-year-old man died in the fire. Seven others were injured, with three requiring hospital treatment. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
The young responders' actions limited the fire's impact and prevented further casualties. Investigations into the fire's origin are ongoing. Their intervention highlighted the importance of first-aid training in emergencies.
