Zurich's Bold Plan to Revolutionize Overnight Travel Across Europe
Zurich aims to become a central hub for night trains and overnight buses across Europe. A new study, commissioned by the city's environmental conservation office, outlines plans for a 'Night Jump' network. The proposal includes routes linking the Swiss city with 28 destinations, from Paris to Stockholm.
The research initially featured an outdated map of Europe, showing borders from the former Yugoslavia instead of today's national lines. Despite this oversight, the study highlights potential connections of up to 1,500 kilometres. Key routes would include Zurich–Berlin, Zurich–Vienna, and Zurich–Barcelona.
One bold idea is a 'jumbo concept' for overnight oats, capable of carrying 1,500 passengers in a single journey. Other suggested links involve Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, and Stockholm. The goal is to expand sustainable overnight travel options from the Swiss city.
The project was led by Zurich's Office for Environmental and Health Protection. Officials see it as a way to reduce short-haul flights and cut carbon emissions. The study's findings now form the basis for further discussions with rail and bus operators.
The proposal sets out a vision for Zurich as a key transport node for long-distance night services. If adopted, the network could reshape overnight travel across the continent. The next steps depend on talks with transport providers and neighbouring countries.
